january 2008/1 Phil Wood hub 3-cross on Mavic CXP 33
So to kick off this year’s wheel log we have a set of track wheels. Mavic CXP 33 rims on Phil Wood hubs using Sapim Race Black double butted spokes and DT Prolock nipples. The pattern was the basic 3-cross and spoke length was 284 mm.
This was the first time that I have used DT Prolock nipples. I was worried that the compound would set too quickly, but not so. You can keep truing and tensioning a while after you have fitted them. I’m normally used to using oil on the tips of the nipples, but of course didn’t need it here. It does make the nipples a bit harder to turn and there is no creaking sound as the spokes reaches a higher tension. This was also the first time I had used a spoke tensiometer (bought myself the Park one for christmas) so didn’t need to go by those familiar sounds.
