throw away your television

tv going into a rubbish bin
Most people are slightly shocked or seem sheepish when I tell them that I don’t have a tv. It’s been around 3 and half years now since I got rid of the thing and I haven’t looked back. Now I wonder how I had all that time. I didn’t I guess. I got sucked in. And the same things happens when I go and visit a friend who of course will have a tv. I watch one thing and then even though I don’t really want to watch the next thing, I end up watching it. Some people can have a tv and just watch whatever they want and then turn it off. I can’t. So I got rid of it. I sold it on ebay. It actually broke and an guy from a tv repair shop bought it. And the same rubbish is still on the tv. Do I miss it? No way.

You have to get rid of your tv. It’s a liberating experience. If you are one of those rare people who are able to just watch it when they want to and then turn it off then I envy you. But from what I have seen, most people can’t. Once the tv goes on, it stays on. It’s so sad to see people getting home from work and then turning on the tv. Why not do something a bit more constructive rather than take this opium substitute. All those things we want to do, all those new year resolutions and ambitions and we waste our lives watching tv.

I read about experiments in the usa about people giving up tv for a month and all hell broke lose. One guy completely lost it and shot his wife. Ok, that’s an extreme case, but people are really hooked and they don’t know that they are until they are faced with it. Could you give up tv for a month?

from the Red Hot Chili Peppers song by the same name

Throw away your television
Take the noose off your ambition
Reinvent your intuition now
Its a repeat of a story told
Its a repeat and its getting old
