december 2008/37 Sturmey Archer on Mavic G40 27 in rims
When you look closely you see that it’s not 700c but 27in. I remember having a bike in the eighties and the tyres were 27 x 1¼. So these wheels were all about restoring gems from the past.
Mavic G40 rims built onto Sturmey Archer hubs. I was a bit surprised at the spoke lengths that spocalc was giving me. But I had to keep reminding myself that this wasn’t a 700c rim. The front was laced radially using DT Swiss Champion plain gauge spokes with brass nipples and a spoke length of 282mm. The rear was laced in a crow’s foot pattern using the same type of spokes. With higher flanges the radial lengths were 276mm and the 2-cross lengths were 286mm. Linseed oil on both wheels and 36 holes. I fitted tyres and tubes onto these wheels too but they are not shown in the photos.
