2009/12 Shimano Tiagra FH-4400 on Mavic A719 3-cross

These wheels were a rebuild rather than a new build. So the hubs were kept and the existing rims, Mavic Open Sport, were discarded. Rather than take the time to undo each nipple individually, I just snipped each spoke using a cable cutter. This made the dismantling process so much easier. Then came the tricky part – getting hold of the new rims.

The required rims were Mavic A719. 32 hole for the front and 36 hole for the rear. But everywhere I looked only seemed to have them in 36 hole and difficult to find them in silver. I eventually found them in black at a decent price. But then the courier company managed to lose them somewhere and had I not made an enquiry as their whereabouts neither the online bike store (who I won’t name) nor the courier company would have contacted me. After many phonecalls the rims finally arrived but other parts that I ordered remained missing. A further phone call to the bike shop revealed that they were out of stock and were waiting on their suppliers. Suffice to say that I cancelled the order.

Shimano Tiagra FH-4400 road hubs laced 3-cross to Mavic A719 in black with 32 hole front and 36 hole rear. 294mm on the front and 292/290mm on the rear. ACI Alpina doubled butted spokes on the front and DT Swiss competition plain gauge spokes on the rear with plain brass nipples.
