I have no problem with broccoli

It must have been around ten years ago when I first had an attack of broccoli poisoning. I was up most of the night with strong stomach cramps, vomiting and obviously no sleep. I took lots of Rennie and managed to get at least a little sleep by lying on my back with my knees up. This first time I didn’t know it was broccoli and just assumed that something was off. The next time I had broccoli it happened again. Same symptoms that lasted nearly all night. I had experienced something similar to this a few years before that after eating a lot of cabbage soup. Perhaps there was something in broccoli that was also in cabbage. I tried broccoli one more time a few weeks later and it all happened once again.

Since then I hadn’t investigated any further other than cutting it from my diet. I did like broccoli but didn’t really miss it when it wasn’t there. But whenever anyone invited me to dinner I had to inform them that I had a problem with broccoli. They immediately assumed that I simply didn’t like it and told me that it was good for me. I just shrugged and told them that I didn’t want to risk it but did try it every year or so just to see if I was over it. And a month or so ago, around May 2009 the symptoms seemed to have gone.

At first I thought it was just a fluke as I had consumed only a small amount. I had some noodles at a friends house and there were a few small pieces of broccoli in there. A week or so later I ate a couple of medium sized florets as part of a meal with no ill effects. About a week after that I ate a good handful and was free from any of the previously described symptoms. Since then I have continued to eat broccoli feeling free in the knowledge that I no longer had any dietary restrictions.
