mate

Yerba mate. Have you heard of it? Unless you are a native of South America or go there a lot, then probably not. I have tried the mate tea bags before but never the real thing. And last Friday I had my first taste.
It’s served in a little silver cup that is lined with wood. The cup is filled with ground herbs and then steeped in hot water. The resulting brew is then drunk with a silver straw. It tastes a bit like green tea and my friend added honey to the mix as it was my first time.
Traditionally one has to drink the whole cup and then pass it on. The ’server’, my friend in this case then refills the cup with hot water from a thermos flask. It would then be passed onto the next person who would then do the same. And then return it to the server for refilling. The silver straw does get quite hot, so I guess there is an art to how one would sip the mixture.
Here is an article I found on wikipedia about mate:
I’m looking forward to my next sip
