My old G4 is online again

Since moving my stuff over in January my old Mac G4 which used to be my main computer has been sitting in the corner idly. I miss the big screen and the power. But it’s no good if you can’t be online these days. And it’s as noisy as hell even with my rewiring of the fans. But a few days ago I decided to get an airport card and get the thing online again. For less than a tenner I got myself an airport compatible pci card. And lo and behold it was actually plug and play. Sometimes these things require a lot of configuration and hacking but within minutes of installing it I was up and running. I upgraded loads of software and took a look at my old browser bookmarks. But it seemed slow and sluggish. Even my ibook G4 laptop and this thing which is a second hand pc running ubuntu seem to be so much faster.

But it was nice to have it running in the background and piping out bassdrive through what used to be my home studio. That all worked very well indeed. My plan with that computer was to keep it going till it just gave out but just like guys spend their weekends working on their old cars I’m determined to get even more performance out of this old beast even as the years go on. But then a liquid cooled G5 would be nice too. Bet they’re not too expensive on the bay.
