back up drive bites the dust

I bought a second hand hard drive from ebay about a year or so ago. I put it inside a hard drive enclosure and used it as an external back up drive. But then after a recent os upgrade my mac stopped recognising the drive. Sometimes it would recognise it and at other times it would not. So I eventually took it out and then put it inside the machine. So now I could back up immediately after saving a file. That worked ok for a few weeks and then that was it.

I could see the drive in system profiler for the next day and then after that I could hear the drive powering up and then switching off. So now it’s out. Last month my ipod shuffle had to be reset. I was using that as a back up for my site files. So what gives? I just want to back up for heaven’s sake. So what next? Well, I burned all the site files onto cd, but a hard drive would be the best way to go. I guess I should buy a new one instead of a second hand one as they are said to fail after 5 years or so.

So, be paranoid about backing up.
